Is Deodorant Dangerous?

Putting on deodorant is a normal part of our hygiene routines. It helps keep us smelling fresh and clean, but did you know that this common practice may be harming your health? This article will explain how deodorant can be a health concern and what you can do about it.

What does deodorant contain?

Aluminum chlorohydrate is one of the most common compounds used in antiperspirants. It is included in up to 25% of hygiene products and is typically added as an antiperspirant.  Aluminum salts plug sweat proteins that bind to the wall of the sweat duct, thus having an anti-sweating effect.

Triclosan is a compound shown to impact the body’s hormones and can interfere with hormonal signaling. Triclosan’s endocrine disrupting factors have been proven by a myriad of scientific studies and because of this, the FDA actually banned its use in hand soaps. It is still permitted in low amounts in items such as deodorant.

Diethanolamine (DEA) is a compound used in deodorant and other hygiene products that has been linked to increased risks of developing cancer.

Parabens are chemicals used in traditional care products that mimic estrogen’s role in the body. Parabens have been linked to the development of breast cancer.

How does deodorant impact the body?

When the above chemicals are applied to the skin, they are absorbed and can spread into tissues and even organ systems, causing possible disruption and may contribute to health issues and elevate cancer risks.   

Research shows that aluminum chlorohydrate, when applied to the skin showed 0.012% of the applied aluminum was absorbed through the skin, which accounted for 4 mcg of aluminum being absorbed following a single application.  Aluminum has been linked to a wide range of health issues, including Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Antiperspirants are also not recommended because the body has processes it uses to detoxify itself. Sweating is the body’s way of ridding itself of toxins and when you inhibit your bodies ability to remove contaminants, you do not expel dangerous things your body needs to get rid of. Sweating is a natural process that must be done in order to have the most optimal health possible.

What are alternatives to using traditional deodorant?

There are many holistic substances which can be used as natural deodorant options to control odor.

Rock crystal deodorant is a type of alternative deodorant which is made from a natural mineral salt called potassium alum. The potassium alum salt kills the bacteria that causes underarm odor. It is not an antiperspirant and you will still sweat, but the sweat will not smell.  This is beneficial because it allows your body to expel toxins without you smelling terrible.

To use: It must be applied to clean skin. It is recommended that you apply the rock crystal after you shower.  It is not like traditional deodorants and will not coat already sweaty areas. It only works if you apply it to clean skin to prevent smells. An easy trick if you cannot shower before applying is to wipe your underarms with soap and water with a washcloth before applying.

HOW TO MAKE NATURAL DEODORANT

Ingredients

1 Tbsp Coconut Oil

1 Tbsp Shea Butter

1 Tbsp Beeswax Pellets

3/4 tsp Vitamin E Oil

2 Tbsp Cornstarch

10 drops Essential Oil of Choice

Instructions

Combine coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax in a heat safe container.

Add heat safe container into a small saucepan of simmering water to make a double boiler.

Allow mixture to heat.

Stir thoroughly.

Remove from the heat as soon as mixture is completely melted.

Add Vitamin E oil and cornstarch and stir until smooth.

Remove the sauce pan from the stove

Leave the container in the water to make the mixing easier.

Add in the essential oil.

Pour into storage container.

Allow the deodorant to cool completely.

Remember, sweating is the body’s process to remove toxins, so you want to be able to do so! Switching to a natural deodorant is a great way to help your body be healthier.

Pour 1/2 Cup Olive Oil into bottle. 

Add 25 drops of sweet orange essential oil into bottle. 

Add 15 drops of lemon essential oil into bottle. 

Shake well to mix all ingredients. 

Label the bottle and place in a cool place away from kids and pets. 

To Use: Apply to dry cloth and wipe furniture down to polish and dust naturally.

What are Vibrations?

It is a known scientific fact that all living things emit a frequency and vibrations. Vibrations refer to the movement of atoms and particles caused by energy. All living things and objects that contain atoms emit a vibrational frequency.

Frequencies are measured in hertz (Hz) units and are valued at the rate that vibrations occur. Frequencies are used to discern vibrational patterns. Atoms vibrating at a higher rate are valued at a higher frequency than an atom that is vibrating at a lower rate. Understanding the difference between high and low frequencies is imperative to understand how vibrational frequencies can impact your health.

You, as a human, emit infrasonic waves, which are low-frequency vibrations caused by heartbeats, breathing and the pumping of blood throughout the body. Live organs also produce energy frequencies. All living things and organic compounds emit an energy field. Studies have shown that free electrons absorbed into the body through direct contact with the Earth help regulate natural processes such as circadian rhythm regulation and reduce acute stress and inflammation levels. Connecting with Earth’s frequencies may help align the body’s biological processes and regulate diurnal body rhythms. We, as human beings have unfortunately separated ourselves from nature. Richard Feynman’s studies on electromagnetism won him a nobel prize and proved that when the human body’s potential is equal to the Earth’s electric potential, it becomes an extension of the Earth’s innate electric system. The Earth’s potential thus becomes the “working agent that cancels, reduces, or pushes away electric fields from the body.” Previous studies also showed an improved immune cell response and  pain reduction from the practice of earthing.

The earth itself emits frequencies. According to a study published by the National Institutes of Health, the Earth’s surface possesses a continuous amount of electrons.  The Earth’s frequency potential can promote an internal bioelectrical environment for the normal functioning of living things.

How to Raise your Frequency

1-Earthing/Grounding. 

Earthing, also known as grounding, is a practice that can benefit virtually every living being. It doesn’t cost anything but it can bring a wide variety of benefits. All living things have an optimal frequency that occurs when each of the cells in our body vibrates at the frequency it was created to. Earthing is a great way to raise your vibrational frequency.

Earthing or Grounding is the concept of physically connecting to any part of earth. This can be grass, dirt, water, basically it is physically experiencing one or more of the elements. Here is a list of easy ways you can raise your vibrational frequency.

  • Go Barefoot.

Taking your shoes off and feeling the grass between your toes is a great way to connect with the earth beneath your feet. Simply take your shoes off and take a walk around your yard. If you don’t have a yard, go to a local park or nature reserve, take your shoes off and take a relaxing stroll.

2- Connect with the elements.

The four elements are: Fire. Water. Earth and Air. Connecting with them will help you raise your vibrational frequency.

To connect with fire: Light a natural, organic candle or build a safely contained campfire in a fire pit or other safe space.

To connect with air:  Open a window or step outside to enjoy the breeze.

To connect with water: Find a natural source such as a lake, creek, pond or ocean. If you do not live near a natural source, there are many affordable “zen” fountains you can purchase to help you connect with the water element.

To connect with Earth: There are many various ways to connect with the Earth element. As previously mentioned, the practice of grounding is one way but there are also activities such as gardening or even just playing in a sandbox or with dirt can help you find serenity.

3- Protect your Energy!

Negative people and actions can decrease your vibration and impact your quality of life. It is important to analyze your life for things, experiences and influences that might be a negative force. Are the people in your life encouraging you or bring you down? Are you enjoying life or just enduring it?  Are you living or existing?

If you find that your life contains negative forces, it is imperative you eliminate as many of those toxins as possible. You get ONE life, there is no sense wasting it with negativity.

4- Be positive!

You can raise your frequency with your perception. The brain responds to the reality it thinks it’s in. If you continuously tell yourself negative things, it will perceive a negative reality. When you focus on what is wrong, you lose sight of what is right.  Focusing on a positive mindset, gratitude and affirmations will  help you raise your frequency.

5- Take Care of your Body!

Eat healthy, organic foods, as these have a higher vibrational frequency. When you are giving your body whole foods that are nutritious, you are giving it the best chance for wellness.
