Time management is an essential tool in the success of one’s life. Without it, one cannot fully apply themselves properly to the goals and tasks they must complete. With the many factors of life such as work, parenting, self-care and other responsibilities, it can be difficult to manage everything without feeling overwhelmed. The Harris Poll conducted by the American Psychological Association from April 24 to May 4, 2020, independently polled 3,013 Americans inquiring how they would rate their stress level on a scale of one to ten; ten being the highest stress rating and one being the lowest. The poll findings showed that the average stress level was 5.9. The study also found that adults who were parents reported higher levels of stress. 46% reported stress levels which ranged between eight and ten, ten being the highest rated stress level. Incidentally, only 28% of adults without children reported stress levels in the 8-10 range. It stands to reason that time management is a key factor in stress reduction and also success.
To properly achieve appropriate time management skills, the first step is to prioritize all the responsibilities in your life by order of importance. One must calculate which tasks must take precedence and which can be delayed until a later time. For example, caring for children would be categorized higher on the priority list verses something like housework; though that is an important task as well. Learning to manage which responsibilities come first can be a challenge for those who are overachieving personalities. It is easy to overextend oneself, which is eventually harmful because when this happens, tasks tend to get completed swiftly and not as effectively. When someone is overwhelmed with too many tasks, they may lose the ability to complete things thoroughly. Job performance, personal relationships and even physical health can suffer due to overextension. For this reason, scheduling and planning are effective time management tools. Once the responsibilities are prioritized, one can then create a schedule to ensure all tasks are completed. It is imperative to have a schedule to successfully complete goals in a timely manner. Utilizing tools such as calendars, planning applications or even a white board with written assignments or tasks can provide the necessary visual reminders to manage tasks appropriately.
The final time management tool is effective communication. Whether it is in a work, school or home environment, communication is key to accomplishing goals and getting tasks completed. It is imperative to communicate with your coworkers and family members to ensure that what needs to be done is understood. Unclear communication in the workplace can cause proficiency to be negatively impacted. When assignments are clearly understood, they can be accomplished properly. Much time is wasted because of miscommunication and making sure that tasks and assignments are clearly defined will help aid in proper time management.
In conclusion, time management skills involve self-discipline and communication. It is an essential part of living a successful adult life.
